Recently, following the signing
of a military cooperation agreement between the Indonesian Minister of Defense
and the U.S. Secretary of Defense at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., on April
13, 2026, the Indonesian public was thrown into an uproar by the proposal for
blanket overflight access, which would allow U.S. military aircraft to freely
traverse Indonesian airspace. The public in Indonesia was in an uproar, and the
controversy erupted with great intensity. Amid the tensions of the U.S.-Israel
vs. Iran conflict, with no clear end in sight, Indonesia now faces a real test
regarding the principle of a free and active foreign policy, which defines the
nation’s identity. Following widespread public opposition, the government
clarified that the matter is currently only a U.S. proposal and remains under
internal government review, meaning no binding decision has yet been made.

Furthermore, credit must be given to the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for asserting that Indonesia’s airspace cannot be used by any foreign power without a clear legal framework. The author believes that such a firm stance must be communicated openly to avoid the impression that Indonesia has become a proxy for the United States. What would happen if this uproar turned out to be true? Indonesia would no longer be a free and active nation, but would instead become a lackey or servant of another country with hidden interests seeking to exploit Indonesia’s strategic position. We must ensure that foreign policy blunders—such as the sudden decision to make Indonesia a member of the Board of Peace without consulting the Indonesian House of Representatives or the Indonesian people—do not recur. Therefore, we must firmly reject the United States’ proposal for blanket overflight access.
