ABSTRACT
Background: This study aims to explain the interconnection between Malaysia's role in the ASEAN Chairmanship 2025, the Thailand-Cambodia conflict management, and the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in the pillar of peace, justice, and strong institutions. The research focuses on examining the concrete leadership aspects demonstrated by Malaysia in carrying out its duties as the ASEAN Chair in 2025—particularly in managing the sharp escalation of the Thailand-Cambodia border conflict in 2025. Methods: This study employs a qualitative approach with an explanatory-descriptive method. Findings: The findings indicate a linkage between Malaysia's role in the ASEAN Chairmanship 2025, efforts in managing the Thailand-Cambodia conflict, and the Sustainable Development Goals. Conclusion: The study concludes that although there are critical notes regarding the management of the Thailand-Cambodia border conflict, Malaysia’s role in the ASEAN Chairmanship 2025 was quite significant in mitigating the escalation of tensions at the Thailand-Cambodia border, effectively preventing the emergence of new casualties from military violence. Novelty/Originality of this article: This research contributes to the discourse on regional peacebuilding and conflict resolution by providing insights into forms of international conflict management practices. The study recommends the need for sanction mechanisms to ensure ASEAN member states comply with jointly agreed-upon consensus.
